How To Conquer Frustratingly Persistent Lawn Weeds
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

It was a frustrating experience for any gardener, and being the impatient one that I am, it was painstakingly aggravating for me, especially.

I'm talking about lawn weeds, and how, one summer, they managed to invade my garden and conquer it with undeniable efficacy and dominance, that Rome's invasion of Pompeii would seem like a minor accomplishment.

It all began when my wife asked one day if I changed the grass in our lawn. I took a look, and lo and behold, she wasn't referring to actual grass! Weeds have started to grow under my nose, and everything happened so fast that I didn't even have time to realize the gravity of the situation.

With the lawn mower that has been neglected throughout the past winter, I tried to get rid of the lawn weeds. It worked, or so I thought. The weeds were gone after two or three hours of mowing.

But after two weeks, the lawn weeds were back, and as if they were announcing their triumphant revenge, they grew more preponderantly than ever before.

So I mowed the lawn once more, hoping that second servings would do the trick.

Guess what? It didn't. After a week or so, the lawn weeds were back, stronger than ever before. My quest to defeat the weeds would end in tragedy, it seemed.

But I did realize that persistent weeds should be met with equal persistence on my part. So I researched on the matter, and tried out all the weed killing methods I found.

Of all the strategies I employed, two stood out as amazingly effective. These are cycling and mulching.

Cycling involves getting rid of the topmost portions of the weeds, much like what I did when I mowed the lawn. But it shouldn't stop there. After mowing, the ground should be cultivated, and the soil turned around to place the weed seeds as well as the weed seedling at the top of the pile. Thereafter, a week or so later, when the weeds would start to grow once more, the process should be repeated. It's a continuous commitment that will only stop once the weeds are totally eradicated. And based on my experience, this can be achieved after the fourth cycle.

Mulching entails the spreading of leaves and other organic materials on top of the soil. This will immediately kills existing weeds and thwart the growth of budding ones. Additionally, mulching will make the soil healthy, which will only mean good things for your growing crops.

Yes, I got frustrated with weeds at first, but eventually, when I discovered that the problem wasn't bigger than I was, I did get a sense of fulfillment in being able to defeat the weeds. Persistence pays, and my garden benefited from the same.
